CAN EXERCISE KEEP YOU MENTALLY SHARP?
by posted 10/27/2011

UnitedHealthcare is committed to helping people live healthier lives.   Players, Parents and Coaches can all benefit from making small but smart lifestyle changes that can have a big impact on your health.  Give your health and well being a boost today.  Start making the healthy changes you've been putting off and watch the benefits add up.

CAN EXERCISE KEEP YOU MENTALLY SHARP?

Exercise may be the best wonder drug of them all - maintaining not just your body, but your mind as well.

Scientists are finding that exercise actually may help prevent mental decline as we age. Regular exercise may enhance memory, planning and organization skills, as well as the ability to juggle mental tasks.

Researchers believe regular exercise - for at least 30 minutes on most days of the week - can help keep your brain sharp. Exercise improves how well the body can pump blood to the brain, helping it perform better. Scientists speculate that activity stimulates the growth of nerve cells in the hippocampus, the region of the brain involved in memory.

Another positive effect deals with lowering blood pressure.

Activity can also help with depression. Depression can affect memory and concentration. Exercise helps relieve feelings of depression by increasing blood flow and improving how the brain handles the chemicals that are responsible for mood.

You can't beat exercise. Not only can it help your brain, it can also keep your muscles and joints healthy. Stay limber to help keep your brain - and your body - in shape.

If you are not already doing so, start an exercise routine today and follow these simple tips
  • Get at least 30 minutes of activity - most or all days of the week - that makes you breathe harder. You can break up those 30 minutes throughout your day by taking a 10- or 15-minute walk in the morning, another at lunch and a third in the evening.

  • Don't neglect your muscles. If you don't use them, you'll lose them. Strong muscles help you with numerous everyday tasks

  • Work on your balance. Stand on one foot, then the other. If you're able, try not to hold onto anything for support. Stand up from sitting in a chair without using your hands or arms. Every now and then, walk heel-to-toe.

  • Be sure to stretch as part of a well rounded routine of strength and conditioning exercises. This can help prevent back pain and helps you remain limber. Never stretch so far that it hurts.
It all counts and it adds up!

All participants must have a DMV Issued ID
by posted 06/01/2010

Everyone participating in the Fairfax County Youth Football League (FCYFL) must have a valid VA DMV ID card in hand for weigh-in.  No other form of ID is acceptable to FCYFL.  This means FCYFL will not accept birth certificates, military IDs, passports or any form of ID other than a VA DMV ID.

For our returning players this is a gentle reminder to check the expiration date on your current ID.  Older versions of the ID expire after 5 years.  For our new players here is a link to the VA DMV website that explains how to obtain a VA DMV ID.

Due to security issues, the VA DMV will not issue an ID at the time of application.  These IDs are mailed to your home and the process can take up to 2 weeks.
